History of discovery and tourism development at Dark Cave

Dark Cave is one of the pristine caves located within Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. It was discovered long ago by residents and was once used as a shelter during the resistance war against the United States. However, it wasn’t until 1990 that experts from the British Royal Caving Association conducted a formal survey and named the cave based on its defining characteristic: the thick darkness that envelops its entire interior.

Tourism activities at Dark Cave began in 2011, when a cave exploration route by boat from the Tro Mong ranger station dock was officially launched. However, the key milestone that transformed this site into a thrilling adventure destination came in September 2014, with the construction of a 400-meter-long zipline – the longest in Vietnam at this time.

Since then, the Chay River – Dark Cave tourist area has become a favorite destination for thrill-seekers, combining the exploration of unspoiled nature with unique activities such as ziplining, river swimming, kayaking, and bathing in mineral-rich mud inside the cave.

The Unique Geology of Dark Cave

Dark Cave was formed around 400 to 500 million years ago when the floor of the ancient ocean was uplifted due to geological tectonic processes. Evidence of this era is still preserved inside the cave, with numerous fossils of ancient marine organisms, including fossilized fish imprints on the rock, as well as fossils of insects and mollusks.

Not only known for its cave system featuring both dry and water-filled branches, Dark Cave also boasts striking stalactite formations with unique colors. Ancient stalactites appear in shades of lemon yellow and white limestone, while some are covered with parasitic ferns, creating mossy green formations. Even more remarkably, Dark Cave is where scientists discovered a completely new species of crab, which is now on display at Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.

One of the most impressive highlights of Dark Cave is its natural mud pool, located deep inside the cave. This fine, mineral-rich mud has accumulated over millions of years, offering a uniquely relaxing experience as visitors float weightlessly in complete darkness. It is this combination of unique geology, untouched natural landscapes, and adventurous experiences that makes Dark Cave one of the most captivating destinations in Phong Nha – Ke Bang.
